RR - Bolshoi
Theatre
«Even closer, on a wide square, rises the Petrovsky Theatre, a work of the latest art, a huge building made according to all the rules of taste, with a flat roof and a majestic portico, on which the alabaster Apollo rises, standing on one leg in an alabaster chariot, motionlessly driving three alabaster horses and looking with vexation at the Kremlin wall, which jealously separates him from the ancient shrines of Russia!»
Mikhail Lermontov, «Panorama of Moscow»
The current project has been temporarily paused for research purposes after successfully creating the desired "saint wheels" for the client. One element that has continually inspired me, especially following my visit to the Bolshoi Theatre for a performance of Swan Lake, is the theatre's façade. Its design reminded me strongly of the iconic Rolls-Royce grille. I reflected on which details stood out most, and the first thing that came to mind was the angels beneath Apollo’s Quadriga.
Initially, I considered replacing the Rolls-Royce "Spirit of Ecstasy" with Apollo’s Quadriga, but it felt both highly challenging and somewhat disrespectful to the legacy of the British automotive company. Instead, I decided to incorporate the angels as engraved details.
I presented various concepts to the client, including a body kit inspired by my favorite car, the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. However, this idea wasn’t well-received, as the client felt that hiding the stunning "saint wheels" would be a mistake. Additionally, I created sketches featuring ballerinas and elements of the Bolshoi Theatre, which are still being considered for integration into the fender design.
For the interior, the client requested a concept design in blue and gold. This gave me the opportunity to experiment with luxurious materials like leather, blended with minimalistic motifs inspired by the Bolshoi Theatre. These designs are still under review.
Finally, considering the extreme weather conditions in Russia and the fact that the car would spend winters in a garage, I suggested customizing the car cover. My idea was to sew the angels and logo onto the cover, precisely positioned above the grille, to maintain the design's elegance even when the car is stored.
